Treatment and causes of facial hair?
I had a bunch of blood drawn last week to see if I have to much testosterone or polycystic ovary syndrome. If it is to much testosterone the doctor said that I could take a medication that is a diuretic to get rid of the extra testosterone. Has anyone else ever heard of this and does it work? I was also wondering if there is any treatment if I have PCOS to get rid of the hair. I’m hoping it’s not PCOS because my husband and I have just started trying to conceive and I know it can make that difficult. I have also had laser hair removal done for a year now. The growth has slowed some but still comes back.
PCOS can definitely cause the facial hair issues. In fact, that is one of the most common complaints with women in PCOS. The medication(s) prescribed to you may help with the facial hair but may take a few months for you to notice a difference in facial hair growth (or lack of it). There are also prescription hair minimizers (Vaniqa, for example) that many PCOS patients use. As far as the medication you were asking about (the diuretic) these get rid of excess salt and water in the body, and reduces Androgen levels in women. One word of caution though – if you are trying to get pregnant talk to your doctor about what he/she prescribes because there are some potential side effects of the diuretic (specifically spironolactone) on the fetus.
